72 Hour Kit Challenge

Last week we got an e-mail asking us if we would take the challenge as a family and live off the food we had in our 72 Hour Emergency Kit for the next...you guessed it...72 hours. I thought, this will be so easy...confusing my food storage with my 72 hour kit. About 5 minutes later my brain realized that I couldn't just use the food in my house, I was supposed to have an "already organized" kit! A & I ran around the house and quickly gathered a fair amount of food. We ended up with Pop Tarts and Capri Suns for breakfast all 3 days, canned soup and Spaghettios for lunch...all 3 days, and chili or tuna for dinner with a can of peaches, and green beans for dinner...all 3 days. (Not forgetting the 4 cases of water bottles...one case for each day.) We had one pack of gum and one can of Pringles for snacks.

We thought this would be pretty easy, but quickly realized that this was going to be a very long 72 hours. The worst part was knowing that the Haagen Dazs was just right there in my freezer, calling to me....

The second day we went to the movies with the Munroe's and it was really hard, because we usually get popcorn and treats. BUT we knew they were also taking the challenge so there was a bit of a strength in numbers going on there. We took our gum as our treat, and really, I don't think a stick of bubble gum has ever so good. Afterward, A told me that it was so hard to do this while everyone around us was eating candy. I told her that since we try to live the standards and values that we learn at church, there are going to be lots of times when we have to be different from everyone else, and it isn't ever easy, but it is rewarding to know that you are trying to do what's right.

Little plug here for the movie "UP". LOVED IT!!!

After we finished, we sat down as a family and decided what we did and didn't like about what we had in our kit, and went out the next day and got the things we wanted, packed them into backpacks, and have them ready to go in our closet by the garage. I'm fairly certain that the kids won't ever forget this experience.

I'm so glad you did the challenge. I have an awesome kit that tells what to eat each day...I've changed it a bit for my kids but that is the highlight of General conference..getting the kit out and "rotating" the good stuff in it. Great answer for Abby by the way.

I am proud of you for taking that challenge. I had to use mine while on my mission and it wasn't easy. Water is very important. I like that you asked your kids after what they liked and didn't like. We definetly need to get our supplies stocked up. Make sure you have a can opener in one of those bags!

I will call you tomorrow-I'm sorry it has been a busy couple of days. I hope you have fun at G.C.

Good for you to take on the challenge! We went camping instead! After stake conference I plan to get the 72 hour kit all organized and complete.
