I'm Famous!

EMCC student takes 1st place in Western Eye photo contest

STEPHANIE FRAZIER, A PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENT at Estrella Mountain Community College, won first place for her photo titled Kuwanyauma in Phoenix College’s annual Western Eye photo competition.

Local photographer Stephanie Frazier's Kuwanyauma was selected the first place winner in the prestigious Phoenix College annual Western Eye photo competition.
Each year top student photographers from all Maricopa colleges, Arizona State University and local high schools submit photographs to the event designed to showcase the best emerging Valley photographers.

This year Mark Klett (nationally known photographer and professor at ASU) selected 30 out of 100 submitted works for exhibition and awards.

Frazier's black and white surreal still life was judged first place winner. Kuwanyauma is a Hopi word roughly translated as "beautiful butterfly wing."

Frazier is a first semester photography student who has taught herself much about photography. Her one-time hobby evolved into a part-time portrait business, which prompted her to take a photo class at Estrella Mountain Community College to perfect her techniques and broaden her photographic horizons.

The Western Eye Photography exhibit is in the new Eric Fischl Gallery on the second floor of the Fine Arts building on the Phoenix College campus (602-285-7277). The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through Nov. 30.

OBVIOUSLY the Oh Snap isn't on the real picture.
