Jerry and I had been watching TV. I had fallen asleep on the couch who knows when, but had gone upstairs to bed maybe 5 minutes before they went off. Jerry was finishing up his show.
Luckily he could smell that lovely electrical burning smell and followed his "super sniffer" down to the scary basement where the switch for our water pump was in flames. He shut off the electricity to the entire house, blew it out. (Which makes me laugh!) and then turned the power back on to everything but that pump.
Here's the scary part. About 2 feet to the right were tons of old paint cans. About two feet to the left are lots of cardboard boxes full of our stuff. AND about 5 feet to the right is the tank FULL of oil because we don't use it.
Hurray for fire alarms.
Even if they go off in the middle of the night.
And I curse at them.

So glad you are safe!! The fire alarm went off in my house at 2 am once also. I had been up watching TV, just like you, and had just went to bed, just like Jerry. I put my feet down on the floor to see what the heck was going on and stepped in 2 inches of water. The lady upstairs had gotten drunk and flooded her bathroom. It broke through my ceiling at 2 am. We spent the next four months remodeling the whole house. I'm so glad nothing bad happened to you.
